Graduation is coming up. The future is now... and all that stuff. Everybody's kinda freaking out about it, but me? I play it extra cool. And you don't need any more evidence than the fact that I'm reviewing a casual game during graduation week. Yeah, I'm ice. As for the game? It's a tower defense game called Garden Rescue. And it definitely has its fun moments and a generous helping of replay value.

Once upon a time, PopCap Games published a tower defense game called Plants Vs. Zombies, which is extremely well-done and perhaps the best casual game of all time. With Garden Rescue, developer Rainbow Games is doing its very best PVZ impression, right down to pea pods that shoot peas and corn cobs that shoot kernels. You build plant warriors in order to protect a precious strawberry patch from an evil array of insects (instead of zombies). Your plants have various special abilities, like the ability to slow insects or shoot at airborne targets. Your plant-building costs coins (instead of sunshine), which are replenished by your happy strawberries at a slow rate.
How successful is this game as a knock-off of Plants Vs. Zombies? Garden Rescue can't match the ingenuity, wit, charm, music, or graphics of PVZ — and who can, really? — but hear me out, there are a few things to like here. Instead of the five rows of PVZ, you have a large grid and you have to defend against insects in multiple directions, not just straight right to left. This gives Garden Rescue a new dimension to tower defense that gets interesting when the waves of insects keep coming. And the game even throws in a few fresh wrinkles to enemy abilities that will keep you on your toes and keep you clicking that "Next Level" button over and over again.

I will show Garden Rescue to La Familia who are all here for graduation, including a number of my rugrat cousins running around the house right now who will like the bright, cartoony world and simple animation. Garden Rescue is certainly worth a few hours of your time. But it ain't no Plants Vs. Zombies.
